Much is known regarding the presentation and treatment of anxiety disorders in typically developing youth. How this knowledge applies to the anxiety experienced by youth with ASD or ASD-related symptoms is unclear. The evidence-based diagnosis and psychosocial treatment (e.g. cognitive-behavioral therapy: CBT) of anxiety disorders in typically developing youth will be reviewed and compared to emerging data regarding varying clinical presentations of anxiety in ASD. Implications for assessment, differential diagnosis and treatment will also be discussed.
